After falling in love with a reef in Thailand and witnessing it die; we learned about the rapid decline of our reefs and launched Global Coralition- a non profit uniting art, science and communities to accelerate marine ecosystem regeneration. After launching two pilot projects in Thailand and Dominican Republic, we are now embarking on a 30 Reefs Initiative to launch 30 sculptures across 30 countries, catalyzing the creation of biodiversity hubs that can reseed other areas over time. Koh tao, Thailand (2018)
Gifted to the conservation program at Eco Koh Tao, who built 36 pyramids around her, transplanting 5000 corals and using it as a dive, education and restoration site that now spans 200 square meters. Atabey is the Mother of Water from the Arawak/Taino indigenous culture of the Caribbean.
Since the launch of this project, the region has been marine protected by local NGO Magua foundation, we built a land-based coral farm at ISLA academy, and our team has planted 720,000 mangroves in the upstream laguna - preventing wildfires and employing local community in conservation.
Local efforts in coral farming and mangrove restoration are ongoing today and sustained by ecotourism revenue.
